The relationship between effective leadership and personal purpose is well-documented. Knowing and living your purpose increases your clarity and focus, your motivation, and your engagement in life and work. It improves your decision making, makes you more resilient and adaptive, engenders trust, and improves your sense of well being and success.
So why do so many of us live disengaged from ourselves, our passions and our purpose? Simply put, in the course of our lifetime, our schools, communities, and social systems do not encourage, support, or validate the exploration of one’s purpose. We are not taught it in school, in our families, in most of our religious communities, nor in our leadership trainings. We do not openly discuss purpose at social gatherings, at cocktail parties, or in job interviews.
Instead, we act as if feeling passionate and living aligned to a personal north star was “extra” or “indulgent” or not helpful to the ultimate quest of earning comfort and security. But as the research shows, those who live fueled by their purpose are overwhelmingly more effective, creative, intelligent, happier and sustainable.
Indigenous societies had rich cultural traditions to help individuals discover, connect with, and live out their purpose; for example through vision quests, initiation rites, oral storytelling traditions, and walk-abouts. These processes catalyzed a person’s self esteem, and helped understand deeply that they belonged and mattered to the whole. It is time to reconnect with the truth: living on purpose is better for ourselves, our communities and the planet.
As a Certified Purpose Guide, I offer a comprehensive process that includes coaching, exercises, readings, and self reflection that reveal your unique purpose at this stage of your life, ignites your natural intelligence, taps your own inner wisdom, and allows you to see how you hold yourself back from your authentic self.
Comprised of progressive lessons, you emerge clearer about eight facets of your purpose:
1. Vision. What is possible for yourself and community when you embody your purpose and deepest aspirations?
2. Values. What ideals do you stand for in life? What are the practices that shape your thoughts, words and actions?
3. Powers. What natural abilities are you here to offer?
4. Essence. What is the core of who you are, without having to do anything?
5. Giveaway. What do you do to help transform the world? Your unique gift or offering?
6. Task. What mission or assignment do you commit to undertake to support your vision?
7. Message. What is a single, fundamental truth that you are here to share?
8. Delivery System. What is the role, job, career through which you will offer your gifts to the world?
As these eight facets of your purpose become clearer, you can then bring it to life through practical and actionable steps. The result are guaranteed and nothing short of outstanding; your health improves, you gain greater trust in yourself and in life, and your life becomes fuller, richer and more energizing. In your leadership you become more decisive, resilient, compelling and inspiring.
